Highland Announces Plans to provide district kids with food during school closure.

Dear Highland Families,                                                          March 18, 2020

The Lewis County C-1 School District is working to establish a program to provide meals to children in the community during the current school closure caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to our past involvement with the Summer Food Service Program through the Department of Health and Social Services, Highland will be able to provide district children ages 18 and under with FREE MEALS during this school closure.

There are still applications, waivers, and contracts to be approved and submitted, but we are working to get this meal delivery service in operation with a target date of Monday, March 23rd for the first date of delivery. The government program aimed at providing meals to children, usually during the summer, allows for two meals per child per day. Our plan is to provide a single delivery to include a Breakfast and a Lunch meal each day during the closure to children within the Lewis County C-1 School District boundaries who wish to participate. Again, this service will be provided free of charge to all eligible students who sign up for the program.

Due to requirements of the program, the District will be bound to current bus routes as a means of delivery. This means that the buses will be making the same stops that they currently use and either deliver at the home or at current common bus stop locations. If a child age 18 years or younger lives within the LCC1 school boundaries, regardless of whether they attend Highland, homeschool, or any other scenario, they do qualify for the free meals that will be delivered during this school closure.

So, if a child is 18 years or younger and resides within the LCC1 district boundaries, but they do not currently ride the bus or have a designated stop, they can participate in this program by signing up and retrieving their meals from one of the District’s current common drop-off/pick-up locations along our current routes. If anyone should need help determining where the closest bus stop is located in relation to where they reside, please contact the District’s Transportation Director Ben Buening at 573-209-3217 for assistance.

Anyone wishing to participate in this FREE meal delivery program, please complete the following survey: https://forms.gle/DHEo5DNL51NLYcGT7  by 10:00am on Friday, March 20, 2020 to get registered for deliveries expected to start on Monday, March 23, 2020.

I would also like to thank the administration, faculty and staff at Highland Schools for continuing to work tirelessly to provide for our children in these unprecedented and uncertain times. OPAA Food Services and their employees are to be commended for their efforts in making this program possible as well. Finally, thank you to those that have had patience and understanding as we continue to try to do the right thing, make the most informed decisions, and provide for the children of Lewis County C-1!

Sincerely,

John French
